What is gynecology? What diseases does it treat?
WHAT IS GYNECOLOGY?
Gynecology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the female body and reproductive health. Sub-branches of gynecology; obstetrics, obstetrics, infertility, IVF, family planning, gynecological oncology, sexual diseases and sexual problems. Specialist physicians who are interested in gynecology, which is the branch of science that examines women's health and diseases, and who have received this training are also called gynecologists.
A gynecologist is a surgeon who specializes in the female reproductive system, which includes the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, vagina, and vulva. Menstrual problems, contraception, sexuality, menopause and infertility problems are diagnosed and treated by a gynecologist; Most gynecologists also provide prenatal care, while some also provide primary care.
Menstrual problems include amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods), dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods), and menorrhagia (heavy menstrual periods). Menorrhagia is a common indication for hysterectomy, which is the surgical removal of the uterus. Ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and human papillomavirus are other conditions that can be detected by a gynecologist in any area of the female reproductive system, such as incontinence, prolapse and infections of the pelvic organs. A gynecologist can detect fungal, bacterial, viral or protozoal infections.
Most gynecologists are also obstetricians. An obstetrician is an expert in the management of pregnancy, childbirth, and the time immediately after birth, known as the puerperium. Obstetrician/gynecologist provides a wide range of services from preventive care to detection of sexually transmitted diseases and family planning.
